What questions can we pose to an industry on the verge of recovery in an era where the demographic of "travel age adults" is about to mushroom?

Does the tourism industry understand the profit implications of the significant investment that it has already made in mere physical accessibility?
To what extent is the barrier today a cultural deficit of the Tourism Industry that makes it impervious to its own self-interest with a burgeoning under-served market?
How does the industry intend to market the connection between its existing infrastructure investment, attitudes toward travelers with disabilities made concrete in design and carried virally by staff?
What mechanisms does the industry have in place for continuous improvement in the face of the desires of the tourist with a disability?

This session will provide you an overview of the Department of Justice's  new regulations that effective the travel and hospitality industry. We will discuss the new requirements for hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, service dogs (and miniature ponies!) and other changes that become effective March 12, 2011 and beyond.  Resources will be shared.


 

The Identification, Care of Travelers with Hidden Disabilities

Travelers with hidden disabilities number in the millions, but they can be hard to spot, which makes it hard for tourism and hospitality providers to serve their needs. Hiddenly disabled travel expert Liz Hamill will take you on an introductory guided tour, beginning with identification-what is a traveler with a hidden disability? Next, care and feeding: What do people with hidden disabilities (and their travel companions) need from the travel and hospitality industries when they're planning trips, and when they're out on the road? Finally, how can travel and hospitality pros market to travelers with hidden disabilities, enticing them out of their comfort zones and encouraging them to travel to new places?

  

 

Capturing the Business of the Boomer and Older Adult Traveler

 There are 78 million boomers, 84% say travel is their number one leisure goal. Help them reach that goal.

 

Internet realities-Women over the age of 55 are on the internet more than teens. We search for travel, respect consumer opinion, and want to make our own journey experiences. Learn how to attract us through the web, relate to us on Facebook and Twitter, and create the itineraries that resonate with us

Association marketing-For those that create group travel, find the boomer and older adult through strategic alliances with clubs to which they below, learn to create membership benefits through travel strategies.

Tangential marketing- offer the itineraries and expertise that lead the boomer and older adult to travel with their grand children ,older parents and take trips to see where they will live in the next stage of their life, or voluntour for the next level of giving back..

 Emerging Media (also known as Social Media) has opened up the world to people with disabilities. Over the past year, tremendous growth has been seen in this area and this session will cover the new areas of emerging media and developments over the past year.  We will discuss Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In and other tools.

After this session, the attendee will be able to:

1.    Define social and emerging media and how can it be used to reach and interact with people with disabilities.

2.    Use social networks that are more accessible and inviting to people with disabilities as a marketing and recruiting tool.

3.      Use social and emerging media as a brand anchor and a way to interact with people of all ability levels.

Because hidden disabilities are, well...hidden, self-advocacy isn't just a useful tool to help us get what we need when we're on the road. It is the ONLY tool we've got. We will describe how travelers with hidden disabilities can politely, elegantly, effectively, and relentlessly advocate for themselves while they're on the road. Who to talk to, when to talk, what to say, how to say it, and how to deal with language barriers will all be covered in this chat.

Assuring that ICT is accessible is more than making a website accessible.  The travel industry needs to assure every aspect of the customer and employee experience is accessible.  This session will talk about recent lawsuits in this space and ways those and other organizations can avoid litigation.  We will talk about all aspects of this topic including reservations systems, e-ticketing, kiosks, online HR systems, service centers and the travel industry
websites and home pages.  The session will talk about ways the travel industry can differentiate themselves from competitors and drive in a larger market share that is a larger market than China and second largest minority group only behind women.  1 in 3 householders are impacted and the Travel industry can no longer afford to be inaccessible.

Brandon will provide an introduction to the federal Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), which governs protections afforded to passengers with disabilities flying in the United States on commercial airlines.  Learn about recent changes to the law enacted earlier this year, as well as ongoing initiatives to improve air travel for passengers with disabilities.

The Center for Medical Tourism is housed in the HEB School of Business and Administration at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX. It is the first academic-based research center in the medical and retirement tourism travel. The medical tourism presentation will consist of a discussion regarding the worldwide healthcare situation and available resources. Statistics will be provided on the trends in the aging population, increases in obesity and chronic disease, and global risks associated with these factors. Information concerning the types of medical tourism as well as strategies of medical tourism providers will be discussed from both a private and public perspective.

This session shows you not only how you can train and employ people with disabilities in your business but also how to start the business and get it set up and going well!.

What's in a name? Why I chose my travel agency's name: "Travel Plans Unlimited".
Since it's inception, I have offered concepts on training and employing others. As a long-time member of the National Rehabilitation Association and supporter of the former President's Committee on Employment of the Handicapped , my ideas have involved training and employing individuals who happen to be disabled.
Travel Plans Unlimited has had a tradeshow exhibit at five national conferences on employment of individuals with disabilities.

This session will give you serious "food for thought"
